"An old man with a snake tattoo who elbowed me in the face"--I think that's an amazing choice of a detail to include. You could have taken a page to describe how this guy who isn't even a character looks. But you just give us one detail about him, and it does so much to tell us about the narrator's impression. And I love that Zeke grabbed her elbow of all things! So weird, but it works.
"kernels"--that's a great metaphor for farm country like Iowa
